A Guide to Moving Fragile Items Without Breakage

Of all the tasks on your moving checklist, one seems to cause the most anxiety: packing the fragile items. Your delicate wine glasses, the dinnerware from your wedding, that beautiful mirror you love—the thought of them getting damaged in transit is enough to make anyone nervous.

The good news is that with the right supplies and techniques, you can significantly reduce the risk of breakage. As professional movers, we’ve packed thousands of fragile items, and we know the secrets to getting them from one home to another in perfect condition.

This guide will walk you through the same methods we use to ensure your most precious belongings arrive safely.

Step 1: Gather the Right Supplies

Before you even think about wrapping, you need the right tools. Using flimsy boxes or old newspapers is a recipe for disaster. A small investment in proper supplies is the best insurance you can buy for your fragile items.

  • Sturdy, Double-Walled Boxes: Don’t reuse old grocery store boxes. Get proper moving boxes in various sizes. Dish packs, or “barrel boxes,” are excellent for kitchenware as they have thicker walls.
  • Packing Paper: This is your best friend. It’s clean, inexpensive, and perfect for wrapping individual items and filling empty spaces.
  • Bubble Wrap: Use this for extra-delicate items like vases, picture frames, and electronics.
  • Packing Tape: You’ll need more than you think. Get quality tape to securely seal the top and bottom of every box.
  • Markers: For clear, bold labeling.

Step 2: The Golden Rules of Packing Fragiles

No matter what you’re packing, these core principles always apply.

  1. Cushion the Bottom (and Top): Never place a fragile item directly into an empty box. Always start by creating a generous 5-10cm cushion of crumpled packing paper at the bottom. Do the same at the top after the box is full.
  2. Wrap Every Item Individually: Don’t let fragile items touch each other. Wrap each glass, plate, and figurine in its own sheet of packing paper. This prevents them from clinking and chipping.
  3. Pack Plates and Pictures Vertically: Plates, platters, mirrors, and artwork are much stronger on their edge, like books on a shelf. Never pack them flat (stacked on top of each other), as this puts immense pressure on the items at the bottom.
  4. Fill All Gaps: Empty space is the enemy. After your items are in the box, stuff any and all gaps with more crumpled packing paper. When you gently shake the sealed box, nothing should move or rattle.
  5. Don’t Make Boxes Too Heavy: It’s tempting to fill a large box to the brim, but a box that’s too heavy is more likely to be dropped or have its bottom give out. Keep fragile boxes at a manageable weight.

Step 3: A Quick Guide for Common Items

  • Glasses and Mugs: Stuff the inside of each glass with crumpled paper, then wrap it in another sheet. Place them in the box rim-down, as the rim is the strongest part.
  • Lamps: Separate the components. Remove the lightbulb and lampshade. Wrap the base and shade separately and pack them in different boxes.
  • Electronics: If you still have the original packaging, use it! If not, wrap the item securely in bubble wrap and place it in a snug-fitting box, filling all gaps with packing paper.

The Final, Crucial Step: Label Everything!

This is the most important and simplest step. Clearly label every box containing fragile items on the top and on at least two sides. Write “FRAGILE” and “THIS SIDE UP” in large, bold letters. It’s also helpful to note which room it belongs to (e.g., “FRAGILE – KITCHEN GLASSWARE”) to make unpacking easier.
